What causes uneven skin tone & the ingredients that can help
Uneven skin tone is a common concern that pops up in various forms such as acne scars, redness, hyperpigmentation, melasma, or sun spots. We often associate even, glowing skin with “good skin” and with so many buzz words in the skincare industry, it’s important to do your research and understand the cause.
What causes uneven skin?
In order to determine which products and ingredients will help smooth your skin’s texture, diminish dark spots, or reduce redness, the first step is to get to the root of the cause.
The most common reason we see dark spots or redness on our skin is overexposure to the sun. The cells that produce the melanin pigment in our skin are called melanocytes. Melanocyte cells also determine our hair and eye color. Melanocyte cells play a big role in protecting our skin from the sun by blocking UV rays. They are also responsible for tanning. Patches or darkened skin spots form when these cells are rapidly produced and form in high levels.
Melasma, associated with hormonal changes from pregnancy or birth control is another cause for patches on our skin, typically on the face. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone stimulate the production of melanocyte cells, which leads to hyperpigmentation.
Another cause is an increase in melanin production in response to inflammation or skin trauma. Think acne, burns, bites, and other injuries.
What ingredients should you look out for?
Incorporating natural ingredients that support even skin, is a key step in achieving your even skincare goals.
Vitamin C: Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to reduce the production of melanin, fight free radicals, and support glowing skin. Learn more about free radicals here.
Salicylic Acid: Naturally derived from willow bark, salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) known for gently exfoliating the skin, clearing pores, and improving the appearance of hyperpigmentation. It helps promote cell turnover, smooth texture, and reveal a more even-toned complexion. We suggest using a toner with Salicylic Acid, such as our Golden Beryl Toner
Ginger: Ginger is a power house anti-inflammatory ingredient. It eliminates dark spots caused by aging, lightens scars, and improves skin texture and elasticity. Apply a serum that’s potent with ginger like our Golden Beryl Elixir before or after your moisturizer.
Turmeric: Turmeric is another anti-inflammatory ingredient and antioxidant that works to visibly diminish the over production of melanocyte cells that cause dark spots. It’s an effective, natural way to achieve a glowing, vibrant complexion.
CoQ10: Coenzyme Q10 has many benefits that diminish the signs of aging, calm skin, and support melanin production. Read more about CoQ10 here.
What else can you do?
Other important steps you can take are to use proper skin protection like sunscreen (don’t forget to reapply throughout the day!), stay hydrated, and incorporate foods that are rich in ingredients like B12, Carotenoids, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Vitamin A. This includes eggs, citrus, tomatoes, carrots, and cheese. Yes, we said cheese!
